NYRR Group Training

Welcome to NYRR Group Training, with sessions for runners in all five boroughs of New York City.

Geared toward runners of all levels, from newcomers to experienced competitive racers, these workouts offer coaching, camaraderie, and the inspiration that comes from running with others. Whether your goal is to become a runner, to run your first race, or to set a personal best, you’ll find a welcoming atmosphere that encourages you to pursue your goals and have fun.

NYRR Group Training will help you get stronger and faster with your choice of five different types of weekly sessions:

  • Turnover Tuesdays, which focus on interval training (faster short runs with rest intervals between them)
  • Mashup Wednesdays, which offer a variety of interval and tempo workouts
  • Winged-Foot Wednesdays (seasonal), which concentrate on speed intervals 
  • Tempo Thursdays, which primarily feature tempo runs (steady runs at a challenging effort)
  • Weekend Long Runs, coach-led runs on the streets of NYC in the weeks leading up to key NYRR races throughout the year

Runners are divided into compatible groups based on their experience, including results in recent New York Road Runners races when applicable. In a mutually supportive and inspiring environment, you’ll meet like-minded runners and new training partners. (No more loneliness of the long-distance runner!)

Every NYRR Group Training workout begins with a warm-up (including running technique work) and ends with a strength-and-flexibility component.

Special Groups

Fundamentals/Run-Walk Group
In a fun and supportive environment, this separate section of Group Training welcomes new runners, those returning to the sport, and those who have yet to run a mile in less than 13 minutes. Over the course of the eight-week session, runners will be given all the tools they need to progress to a 30-minute nonstop run. No experience is required, and lots of encouragement will be offered.

Weekend Long Run Group
Do you have an upcoming goal race or are you looking to keep your base mileage high as winter approaches? Join our weekend long run program, where we meet at various locations throughout the five boroughs to run 6-11 miles. Workouts are coached to accommodate those who run up to 11 minutes per mile or faster for a long training run. Please note: Bag check will not be offered for these workouts.

In an effort to accommodate our runners and coaches’ schedules, we have decided to shorten this October session to a five-week “Express Session.” There will be no workouts on the following Saturdays:

November 24
December 22

  • September 4–October 27 (in session)
  • October 30–December 22 (registration open)

All workouts except Weekend Long Runs include a bag-check area overseen by NYRR staff.


One workout per week:
NYRR members—$80 ($10/workout based on 8-week session)
Non-members—$100 ($12.50/workout based on 8-week session)

Two workouts per week (Tuesday and Thursday):
NYRR members—$150 ($9.38/workout based on 8-week session)
Non-members—$180 ($11.25/workout based on 8-week session)

Class registration fees are non-refundable and may not be deferred or transferred to another runner after the start of the eight-week session. Location and/or time transfers are allowed pending availability. Please email training@nyrr.org with any questions.
